Piero Busso, Barbaresco, Gallina, VV, 2015

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Piero Busso, Barbaresco, Gallina, VV, 2015

The Gallina Viti Vecchie makes its debut in 2015 – coming from a plot of old vines located in the centre of the Cru, planted in 1953. The soil in this part of the vineyard is rich in calcareous clay, alternating with bluish-grey marl and sands. Vivid and precise, everything is neatly in place. Stony and salty with fresher notes of summer fruits, flowers and mint, reinforced by a sweet and well-integrated tannic structure. A wonderful wine with bags of character and a silky refinement without losing any of its Nebbiolo energy and focus. Every inch the Grand Cru. Fermentation was in wooden vats, followed by a submerged cap maceration lasting 60 days. Ageing was in large Slavonian oak casks for 36 months, prior to 36 months in bottle.

The 2015 Barbaresco Gallina is a very pretty, nuanced wine built on mid-weight structure. Floral notes, sweet tobacco, sweet red cherry, mint, rose water and cinnamon are all very nicely lifted in a gracious, inviting Barbaresco that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2015 is a bit ethereal in feel, but super attractive.

Piero Busso

Piero Busso, with his bright young son Pierguido, is starting to drive quality to greater heights at this top-drawer family Barbaresco domaine. Founded by Guido Busso in the fifties, this domaine is based in Neive and has at its core some fine Nebbiolo vines planted in the Albesani vineyard opposite the winery. The estate's fine holdings don't stop there, however, also boasting parcels in the fabulous Gallina vineyard and Treiso's San Stunet. Winemaking is traditional here, long and slow, up to 45 days maceration on the skins, and ageing is in 25hl slavonian oak casks for two years. These will sweep you off your feet, bewitching high toned pure fruit and floral aspects are their hallmarks. Expressive and seductive, these are wines that have something to say about where they are from.
