Etna Bianco, Le Vigne Niche, Calderara, 2024

Calderara Sottana is undisputedly one of the great crus of Etna. Until recently though, Nerello Mascalese has set the tone. Inspired by a 40-year old Carricante drunk in 2007, Marco and the team began isolating the old Carricante that already existed in Calderara and planting new vines until they had enough for it to stand on its own two feet. The white Calderara shows a more concentrated, deep and mineral profile, with some austerity in youth. Spicier than the other whites, deeper, less showy but highly complex and mineral. Super. Vines average 10-30 years of age and the soil is very rocky and dark.
