Toscana IGT is by far the most famous of Italy´s “Indicazione Geografica Tipica” category of appellation, covering the entirety of Tuscany. Indeed, it was largely inspired by the wines being made in Tuscany at the time; the so-called “Super Tuscans” which broke the conventional laws of the traditional regions. Introduced in 1992, the aim of IGT Toscana was to allow wine-makers greater flexibility outside of these regions without losing status. They needn´t have worried; with wines like Sassicaia, Monteraponi and others, the appellation has become one of the best known and respected in the country.
