Baron d'Ugo, IGT Toscana, 2013

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A disarming mix of ripe wild strawberry fruit mixed with cooler, more grounded notes of chalk, mineral and stone. At once mouthwatering and sumptuous. Open and lushly-fruited yet serious and complex with a fine, echoing finish. The same blend and the same vinification as Campitello (90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino) yet such a different wine. At 570 meters above sea level this South East-facing vineyard is the highest on the Monteraponi estate, indeed one of the very highest in Chianti Classico. The soils are intensely rocky and poor - this is pure hard limestone, known locally as Albarese. In the very best vintages the juice from the Baron d’Ugo vineyard is fermented separately and aged in large French and Slavonian oak casks for 36 months.

critic reviews

91/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2013 Baron'Ugo, Monteraponi's Sangiovese-based blend with dollops of Canaiolo and Colorino, presents a super-classic profile of sweet red cherry, tobacco, dried leaves, mint and earthiness. Medium in body, with good brightness, the 2013 will drink well for at least a handful of years.

The 2013 Baron'Ugo is 99% Sangiovese with just a speck of Colorino and Canaiolo for good measure. Fruit is sourced from vineyards located some 560 meters above sea level. The firmness of the fruit plus its bursting acidity is very evident. This is a fantastic vintage with great potential for future aging. The finish offers elegance and grace with linear structure and direct appeal. There's a pretty note of moist earth or savory cigar on the finish that adds a momentary interlude of softness.
