Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
Shows the polish that is signature to Massetino, with a focus on plum, red cherry and raspberry fruits. Rain in early season followed by a hot dry summer, and this will be ready to drink a few years sooner than the 2019, as it is lighter in structure overall, with tannins that are a little tight. The Cabernet Franc that was planted almost a decade ago is exclusively in the 2nd wine for now,, givign a floral lift through the finish. 50% new oak. Natural yeast fermentation.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2018 Massetino, here in its second release, picks up where the 2017 left off. Let’s start with what is plainly obvious. Massetino, the second wine of Masseto, is more complex and nuanced than most flagship wines in Tuscany’s Maremma. The 2018 beautifully balances energy, aromatic depth and fruit intensity. Mocha, cedar, leather, licorice and blackberry jam all run through the 2018, infusing it with notable complexity. The purity of the fruit is just striking. Once again, the Franc is such a strong and distinctive marker. I loved it. The 2018 spent 15 months in oak and a month in tank prior to bottling.

Masseto

The special grey clay soils that form the core of the Masseto Hill in Tuscany’s Bolgheri are unique in the region. So when all around them were planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Masseto team planted this steep slope with Merlot. Great sun exposure for the leaves and water retentive soils for the roots, the land was tailor-made for this Bordeaux variety. The project came to fruition in 1986 when the first Masseto wine was produced. The result of deep knowledge of the land, attentive hand-management of the vineyards, an elevation of 120 metres above sea-level and complex clay soils, Masseto is an outstanding and individual expression of Merlot. Clay influenced with a Mediterranean lilt, this is a of wine gravitas, mystery and sensuality.
