Fonsecas Crusted Port is a Reserve aged in bottle for three years and has been made since the mid-19th century. It has a tightly wound, slightly laconic bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles; smoked walnut, scorched earth and cracked black pepper. It unfurls nicely in the glass but the aromatics never attain the clarity of the Terra Prima tasted alongside. The palate is quite understated and mellow on the entry with fine tannins and focus, touches of clove, fresh prune and gingerbread infusing the black fruit. It offers a sense of reserve, bottle age having mollified youthful fieriness and replacing it with a fine, singed leather aftertaste. Drink now-2018.
