2021

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

David & Nadia, Elpidios, Swartland, 2021

Elpidios is the red answer to the Aristargos white blend. A Mediterranean blend comprised of 54% Grenache Noir, 31% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 1% Cinsault and 1% Pinotage. Predominantly from granitic vineyards with an average of 40% whole cluster, the wine was raised in a combination of 500L used French oak, concrete and large 4,100L foudré. It is always released after 18 months in bottle. The 2021 Elpidios is a wine of snap and crunch, allied to dark brambly fruits, cherry stones and heather. It is enticing and delicious and will improve over the next decade.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2021 Elpidios contains the highest level of Grenache (54%) to lend backbone, augmented by Rhône red varieties. This is matured in 500-liter French oak and a 4,100-liter foudre for the Pinotage. Red plum, cranberry and Provençal herbs on the nose, with fennel and a touch of thyme, quite complex but backward at the moment. The medium-bodied palate has powdery tannins, good backbone and a little more grip than usual. The finish has a slight reduction with a hint of black olive on the aftertaste. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.

David & Nadia

David & Nadia

David & Nadia Sadie are a young husband and wife team whose thoughtful, sensitive approach to viticulture and winemaking has set them out as one of the Swartland’s shining stars. Their quest to nurture and restore low yielding old vineyards is an effort to breathe new life into the region’s enviable stock of old vines and shine a light on the qualities of the beautiful Swartland at large. More than that though, they are also establishing new vineyards, which they have planted to Grenache - their flagship variety along with Chenin Blanc. Once in the winery, the grapes see a cool soak before spontaneous fermentation and aging in a combination of concrete and neutral French oak. Extractions are gentle and aim for light, lifted fruit, freshness and perfume. The core range comprises four wines: Aristargos, a beautiful Cape White Blend, Elpidios, a Grenache-based Mediterranean blend, and two single varietals – Chenin Blanc and Grenache. At their heart, the core wines are based on vineyards grown in the decomposed granite soils of the Paardeberg, bringing freshness and minerality, blended with schist, iron, and clay based sites, which builds complexity. At the top of the quality pyramid are three single vineyard Chenin Blancs: Hoe-Steen, Skaliekop and Plat’Bos, each a faithful reflection of a different underlying soil type (iron-rich clay, shale, and decomposed granite, respectively). From humble beginnings, David & Nadia are now recognised as one of the Cape’s very top producers.
