David & Nadia, Skaliekop, Chenin Blanc, Swartland, 2020

A shale based single vineyard on the Paardeberg Mountain planted in 1985. The shallow soils here lend a more mineral profile to the wine, one that David describes as “lateral tension”. Lovely fragrant, brittle and salty sensations, on the palate it opens up to reveal jasmine and salted butter. Juicy very clear and calming.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc Skaliekop comes from shale soils in the Paardeberg, aged 11 months in used oak barrels. It has a slightly more floral bouquet with pressed yellow flowers, touches of wild peaches and nectarine, an underlying mineralité becoming more pronounced with aeration. The well-balanced palate has a white peach and apricot-tinged entry and just a hint of more tropical fruit but still a very precise and sustained finish. Excellent.
