    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Lismore Estate, Viognier Reserve, Greyton, 2021

Produced from the surviving 1.8ha in the middle of the Lismore farm, production was just 7 small barrels. The soils here are deep shale. One of the best examples of Viognier we can think of, the Estate Reserve 2021 has a taut, reserved feel at first, before exotic touches of melon unfurl accompanied by mint and violet and cool white peach. Intense with impressive structure and real freshness, we’d love to see this in a line-up of top Condrieu.

The 2021 Viognier Estate Reserve comes from vines on grey white shale (new plantings from 2016 were destroyed in the wildfire), so there is just 1.8-hectares that "soldiered on". It has a backward nose with lime flower and light waxy scents. This feels very contained, then discrete menthol aromas surface. The palate is rounded in texture with dried apricot and touches of yellow plum; the 2021 is packed full of flavour with a lightly spiced, lemongrass-tinged finish. Superb.
