Ultreia de Valtuille, Bierzo, 2017

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A late release from the estate, the 2017 exudes ripe, suave fruit. A simply gorgeous expression of Ultreia de Valtuille. Layers of creamy ripe fruit coat the palate with notes of heather, violet and bitter chocolate. More upfront and open than the 2018 at this stage but with great quality and aging potential too, a wine that can be enjoyed happily over the next decade or more. Spring frosts and prolonged warm, dry conditions reduced the crop load before an early harvest. The wine feels very hands-off with smooth, ripe tannins and a gentle balancing acidity.

Brilliant violet. Vibrant aromas of fresh red and dark berries, baking spices, candied flowers and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with appealingly sweet, expansive black raspberry, cherry, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that show a pleasingly delicate touch. Hints of star anise and succulent herbs build slowly with air and carry through the long, seamless finish, which leaves behind repeating floral and mineral notes.
