Ultreia, La Claudina, Bierzo, 2018
La Claudina is understandably less expressive at this stage next to the straight Godello bottling. Produced from a relatively flat 0.5HA parcel of vines with a south-south east orientation on sandy soils in Valtuille, La Claudina is a warm site producing wines with a sumptuous, rounder profile. The vines are 48 years old here and the wine is aged entirely under flor, with a total production of just 1,500-2,000 bottles a year. A riper, more savoury and spicy expression of Godello. Aged 75% in old oak and 25% in 2 year old barrels for around 12 months with no topping up in order to maintain the flor. 13.5% ABV.
critic reviews
Shimmering straw-yellow. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of peach, Anjou pear, melon and lemon pith, along with a bright floral overtone. Juicy and seamless in texture, displaying impressive depth to the citrus and orchard fruit, chamomile and saffron flavors. Picks up toasted nut and mineral nuances with air and shows excellent clarity on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which echoes the pear and citrus fruit notes and leaves a hint of honeysuckle behind.
