Ultreia, Villegas, Bierzo, 2021
A magical interplay of savoury and dancing sweet fruits, exhibiting high-toned notes of fine earth and wild strawberry with fresh cherry and amaro infusions. Supremely elegant, limpid and finessed. The drinkability and purity of this wine belies its intensity and potential. Produced from old vines of over 100 years old from the sandiest part of the vineyard, it is incredibly alluring and enticing, yet intellectually satisfying – should you have the patience to wait. Just three barrels produced. The first vintage as an independent bottling was 2021.
critic reviews
The new 2021 Ultreia Villegas is from a part of the vineyard that was previously use for the Ultreia Valtuille, and they selected the sandier part to produce this bottling. It's very low yielding, and the grapes ripened slowly so that the wine achieved a moderate 13.08% alcohol and mellow acidity. The nose is very expressive, with berries, herbs and spices, and the palate is tender and elegant, with a velvety texture and soft acidity. The tannins are ultra fine here. There were three used 225-liter oak barrels of this. Some 800 bottles produced.
