Evangelho, Red, 2022
justerini & brooks tasting note
An extraordinary vineyard whose vines were planted back in 1890, ungrafted. Exceedingly deep sandy soils have kept the vines here phylloxera free, while the climate benefits from being directly in the path of the cool pacific winds that are drawn into the Central Valley on a daily basis. At a certain wind-speed a vines’ stomata close, to preserve water, and as a result the grapes from this site retain remarkably low pH levels, and an innate corresponding freshness. Drinking somewhat like a top cru Beaujolais, this crunchy, spicy red offers up notes of peppery mulberry and damson in an energetic yet polished package. A candidate for light chilling.
