    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Salty crisp white fruit, a flash of smoke, then fine crushed rock aromas. This is fresh and snappy, but with impressive fruit concentration with smoky pithy citrus highlights on the finish. Offers some real class at its price point. If taut gunflint, citrus and struck match flavours are those you seek out in your white Burgundies, this will appeal.

Fruit for the 2022 Chardonnay La Combe Verte comes from five premier vineyards in the Willamette Valley planted on both volcanic and marine sedimentary soils: Freedom Hill, Hyland, Koosah, Sojeau and Witness Tree. It was blended with 2% Aligote and matured for eight months in 25% new French oak before finishing with two months in stainless steel. It offers integrated tones of matchstick and flint that complement a core of quince paste, peach preserves, meringue, beeswax and cashews. The light-bodied palate is seamless and shimmery, pairing concentrated, honeyed fruit with linear acidity that results in a weightless feel and an ethereal finish. 1,000 cases were produced.

A burst of savory reduction slowly blows off the 2022 Chardonnay La Combe Verte to reveal a deeply seductive blend of wildflowers and sage, giving way to nectarines and candied ginger. This is surprisingly weighty in feel, communicating a level of prominence balanced by a core of juicy acidity. Flinty minerality adds depth to its core of ripe pears and green melon. The 2022 leaves a pretty inner sweetness while cleaning up remarkably well with traces of candied lime that linger. The La Combe Verte punches well above its price.

    Producer Summary

In the decade since their first bottling, this husband and wife team has created a reputation for producing some of Oregon’s most exciting wines. They are hard to come by, produced in tiny quantities, and beloved by critics. We would go so far as to say these are some of the most immediately impressive Chardonnays we’ve come across from the new world.

    Vintage

The Chardonnay continues in the hugely successful house style and bristles with salty smoky citrus fruits over a core of crisp white peach. Touches of roasted lemon pith on the finish give this another dimension and stick it firmly in the tastes-like-a-much-more-expensive-Chardonnay camp. If taut gunflint, citrus and struck match flavours are those you seek out in your white Burgundies, this will appeal.

    Vineyards

Freedom Hill Vineyard, Hyland Vineyard, Koosah Vineyard, Sojeau Vineyard & Witness Tree Vineyard.

    Winemaking

Fermented and aged in 350L & 500L, barrels for 8 months and finished for 2 months in a stainless steel tank, 25% new oak.
