A White Burgundy Domaine worth following…

Chateau de Meursault’s recent reinvention, since Olivier Halley purchased the domaine in 2012, has been remarkable. Once primarily famed for its welcome to tourists and its unnecessarily large bottles, it is today a beacon of organic viticulture with an enviable portfolio of vineyards and a style that offers pleasure in spades, in bottles that are now, from 2024, a full 45% lighter than they used to be!

A commitment to sustainability and a road to carbon neutrality necessitated the common-sense bottle update, but both point to wider picture of continual betterment. Under the watchful eye of estate Director Stephane Follin-Arbelet every facet of production, from the newly rebuilt chai to the Diam closures now used, has been considered and improved upon in recent years.

Qualitatively, the wines keep getting better too and the 2024s are no exception. Harnessing all the excellence of this superb vintage for White Burgundy, they offer up waves of generous Chardonnay fruit, finely tuned oak profiles, energy, crystalline purity and great precision.

This is an estate that continues to improve and impress, offering top notch White Burgundy at fair prices.

We still have some availability of the wines below, all receiving glowing reviews from Burgundy critic Jasper Morris. Full reviews are at the bottom.

Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Peuillets 1er Cru: “A touch of velvet to the little red fruits” 89–91 Points

Beaune Grèves, Les Trois Journaux 1er Cru “Mid ruby, with a really fine bouquet. Such elegance to the little red fruits, which continues in graceful fashion on the palate. Just let the oak continue its path of integration, and this will become a really fine example. Drink from 2030-2035.” 92-93 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Château “Mid lemon yellow. A scented bouquet with perfumed citrus highlights on top of the white fruit. Mango and mandarin in a lighter key. Some crisper aspects further back on the palate Drink from 2027-2029.” 86-87 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Bourgogne Blanc Terroir d’Exception “Mid lemon yellow. The oak and the ripe fruit combine to give a slightly more generous bouquet, less floral. Suddenly an amazing intensity of fruit storms across the palate, with a mineral underlay, this would impress as a Meursault and is truly a terroir d‘Exception as a Bourgogne. (NB, the star rating is based on assuming this is at Meursault level) Drink from 2028-2034” 93-95 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru “A full ruby magenta colour. Plenty of weight on the nose, with some oak but very much better balanced than the Aloxe-Corton Maréchaudes. Fills the mouth, with a spicy note at the finish, freshly ground white pepper which goes very well with the fruit, now showing a concentrated griotte cherry mixed with the raspberry. Very persistent. Drink from 2030-2036.” 93-95 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Corton Vergennes Grand Cru “Mid yellow with a green touch. Plenty of fruit weight, a little coconut. The natural energy of this vintage, builds a little more flesh through the middle, definitely white fruit albeit with a citrus overlay. Keeps on going at the end. But Corton not Corton-Charlemagne in style. Drink from 2030-2036.” 92-94 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru “Pale lemon. Roasted chestnut for Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, perhaps a question of the wood. There is a sense of immaculate concentration beneath. A toasty note too. A wine to take time over, because it needs time for the tightly wound energy on the palate to unfold. More citrus than stones but with significant potential. Drink from 2030-2036.” 93-95 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Meursault Clos des Grands Charrons “A fine vibrant lemon yellow with a green edge to it. The bouquet has some floral notes, very pretty with a serene plum fruit offering greater depth, while still with the fresh backbone of the vintage. The oaking is well judged. And so too is the integration of the acidity. Drink from 2028-2033.” 91-93 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Meursault Le Limozin, Château de Meursault “Solid lemon yellow. The bouquet is typically Limozin with its wooded feel. A classic downslope Meursault with extra body, once again with something of a citrus infusion. Impressive length. Drink from 2028-2032.” 90-93 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Meursault Les Charmes Dessus 1er Cru “Lemon and lime. Much more nobility of fruit here, less obvious opulence. This has its own refined character, but it is easy to see the solid poise of Charmes behind. Very stylish. Drink from 2030-2036.” 93-95 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Meursault Perrières 1er Cru Bright fresh yellow. There is extra weight here, a little touch of coconut on the nose, perhaps the bouquet is less refined than Charmes Dessus but let us see about the palate. Here there is an additional density plus the full mineral underlay. Long, powerful, yet balanced. Drink from 2030-2038. 93-96 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru Only the old plot is left, the younger vines having had to be pulled out. Yellow with a green tint. Backward in bouquet, yet with startling intensity. This has a depth of flavour allied to its traditional backbone making for an exceptional Champ Canet, where one can see also the proximity of Meursault. Drink from 2030-2036.? 93-95 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Peuillets 1er Cru Crimson red of medium density. A slightly savoury note to the bouquet here, with a touch of velvet to the little red fruits which come behind on the palate. Covers the light tannins nicely. Drink from 2028-2032.? 89-91 Points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
