New Release: Fratelli Brovia’s 2022 Barolos

Fratelli Brovia is one of the very best small family wineries in Piedmont. From their 15ha of Barolo vineyards, they produce some of the most articulate and reliable wines in the region. Galloni cites these 2022s as amongst the best of the vintage.

Alex explained that it all starts from the work in the previous year – there can be no let-up. Better pruning, cover crops, mulching and canopy management through the year all help to inspire quality wines. “Freshness is an obsession,” he explained, and their 2022s have acidity levels close to 2021, bottled after a reduced 18 months in wood, shooting for “sweetness of fruit whilst protecting the long-term development of the wines.”

If one is to judge the merit of producers on their results in more challenging years, then these new releases make clear that Brovia occupies a place right at the top of the tree.

“The 2022 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a total stunner. A Barolo of exquisite finesse, the 2022 shows why this site is so highly regarded. Silky, aromatic and wonderfully deep, this is seriously impressive. All the vineyard signatures are beautifully delineated in the glass. Rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper come alive. What a total delight.
