New Release: Philip Togni Vineyard 2022

HIGH HOPES

Elevated in every sense, the Togni’s 2022s are superb examples of high altitude, Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. More exuberant and open than their more structured 2021 counterparts, these are joyous, expressive interpretations of these great vineyards. But don’t be deceived by their easy charm, these are serious wines with the capacity for long-term cellaring.

It is well documented that 2022 was a hot growing season, however, the Togni’s vineyards lie at an altitude of 2000 feet and benefit from a large diurnal temperature range, which protects acidities and freshness in the grapes. Lisa also uses a lyre trellis system to aid air circulation and hedges the vines to provide protection from the sun. Even with its favourable situation and these mitigations, 2022 was still the earliest harvest on record, starting on the 22nd of August.

These wines are a delight. They possess the aromatics, sumptuous fruit and ripe tannins of a warm vintage yet retain a freshness and seam of acidity that engages and delights the palate. They will provide much early drinking pleasure and will also reward those with patience.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

“Philip Togni's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another impressive effort from this 10-acre vineyard high on Spring Mountain. It's medium- to full-bodied, weighing in at just 13.8% alcohol, but delivers masses of ripe black cherries. Richly concentrated and dense, it's balanced by bright acids, while hints of mocha and fresh raspberries mingle easily on the long, tannic finish. "It's going to be alright," said Togni as we tasted it. "Just give it long enough." Like some of the vintages in the 1990s, the 2022 looks to have all the ingredients to be a 30-year wine.”

“The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard comes from blocks planted on slightly richer soils that have traditionally yielded more forward wines. Just about 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this vintage is a bit more robust than prior vintages, with the concentration and tannins to carry it at least 20 years. Sage and cedar accent blueberries on the nose, while the velvety-textured palate is vibrant and fresh, with a cascade of raspberries and cherries on the lingering finish.”
