Cabernet Sauvignon, Philip Togni Vineyard, 2022
There’s a reserved exuberance to the 2022 Togni. Whilst it primarily appears approachable and rather gregarious, there is also quite a lot of substance and gravitas concealed within. Initially there’s lots of floral scented cassis, hints of roses and tobacco leaf as well as plum and suggestions of garrigue. The generous mid-palate displays an abundance of sweet, detailed berries with touches of mocha and pencil shavings. Whilst seeming quite lavish, the fruit is vibrant and alive, almost tangy, it’s vivacious and brimming with glorious flavours and mouthwatering acidity. Although this has been aged in 40% new French barrels for 20 months, this is almost imperceptible, perfectly integrated into the fruit. The same can be said for the wonderfully silky tannins that provide structure and effortless aging potential. A superb achievement.
critic reviews
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a very pretty, aromatic, fresh mid-weight offering from the Togni family. A wine of grace and understatement, the 2022 is quite restrained. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of red/purplish fruit. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Even so, there is no getting around the fact that this is a lighter vintage.
Philip Togni's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another impressive effort from this 10-acre vineyard high on Spring Mountain. It's medium- to full-bodied, weighing in at just 13.8% alcohol, but delivers masses of ripe black cherries. Richly concentrated and dense, it's balanced by bright acids, while hints of mocha and fresh raspberries mingle easily on the long, tannic finish. "It's going to be alright," said Togni as we tasted it. "Just give it long enough." Like some of the vintages in the 1990s, the 2022 looks to have all the ingredients to be a 30-year wine.
