The Rhys Vineyards 2023s are a revelation. Jeff Brinkman, the winemaker here for over twenty years declared, “it’s such a weird vintage. It was a difficult growing season. We weren’t even sure we’d get the fruit ripe… Then we got a heatwave in October, but we were still picking in November... We were concerned about phenolic ripeness so we didn’t do any whole cluster fermentations except in the Skyline… Initially the reds were very light, but they’ve picked up weight and colour during élevage and have much more power and concentration than expected.”
The wines clearly vindicate Jeff’s approach to dry farming, old wente clones and expressing the uniqueness of each individual terroir. They have exceeded even his very high standards offering transparent Pinot character, wonderful fragrance and tremendous energy. We feel the wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains offer greater clarity and precision than those from the Anderson Valley, hence our slightly reduced selection, focussing on the best of the best.
As for the Chardonnays, Jeff is convinced this is a “great vintage”. We wholeheartedly agree. This is the most exciting range to date, full of gorgeous citrus aromas, flinty minerality, fleshy peachy flavours and intense acidities. These are like sun kissed white Burgundies. Customers who usually shop from the Cote d’Or will adore these spectacular whites.
