Horseshoe Vineyard, Pinot Noir, 2023
Horseshoe was planted in 2004 and lies on a ridge of sedimentary shale called Monterey formation. There’s a lovely exotic spice quality alongside the ripe autumn raspberry and black cherry fruit. The nose is tight and polished, still a bit reticent with fine tea leaves and garrigue below. Quite high toned with flecks of salt and an underlying tender sweetness to the core of fruit. Very beguiling and complex, rooted to the earth but also full of charm and engaging fruit. Returning to this one appreciates the gorgeous inner sweetness, a medley of berry fruit, griotte, salts and fine stones with a touch of peach and even quince too. Finishes with salty, lovely tannins – so engaging and long.
critic reviews
The 2023 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard feels particularly composed and polished, especially juxtaposed against the wilder Horseshoe Hillside bottling tasting alongside. Notes of garrigue, palo santo, dark cherry, black raspberry, iodine and star anise blossom with aeration, building intensity and delineation. But where the Horseshoe really shines is in its seamless, finessed texture and exceptional energy. Though approachable today, the Horseshoe will only grow even more complex with time in the cellar. It’s a masterclass in California terroir.
