Château Coutet, 1er Cru Classé, Barsac, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

A fresh and very pretty nose with orange blossom and candied orange aromas to the fore. Dried pineapple dots the elegant palate, supported by great acidity and lovely clear fruit. This is such a fine Sauternes, the product of a notoriously cold terroir that is always begins harvest 4-5 days after Climens and around 12 after Yquem. Sadly 90% of the harvest was lost to frost in 2021, but what remains is excellent. 135 grams of residual sugar, as opposed to a more normal 145 grams.

The 2021 Coutet has another refined and (for Coutet) low-key bouquet that gradually finds its voice: quince, white peach, pineapple and beeswax scents. A faint hint of saffron that surfaces with aeration. The palate is well-balanced and quite viscous, bearing superb weight and a clean and pure, beautifully defined, botrytis-rich finish. Touches of vanilla emerge on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2021 Coutet is a real success in this challenging vintage, evoking aromas of dried apricot, pineapple, spices and ripe orchard fruits. Medium to full-bodied with a delicate, fleshy texture, the consequence of noble rot, this sweet wine is lively, with bright acids and a long, lingering, penetrating finish.

Pale to medium lemon-yellow in color, the 2021 Coutet has a wonderfully fragrant nose of lime blossoms, honeycomb, and marzipan over a core of lemon tart, juicy peaches, and spiced pears. The palate shimmers with energy and tension, delivering tightly packed stone fruit and spicy layers with a very long, opulent finish. Residual sugar around 130 g/l.
