Hipping, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Fluid and complex, Hipping is always a delight to taste as its wild fermentation and light reduction blows off to reveal a palate of sleek apricot and citrus notes, nice, well-covered acidity and a deliciously fruity, forthcoming impression. Produced from a blend of four small plots, fermented and aged in 1200L cask. Hipping is a justly famous, steep, southeast/east facing vineyard on red slate – along with Pettenthal, one of the key sites in the Roter Hang.

critic reviews

94/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2023 Nierstein Hipping GG is pure, deep and flinty on the complex and savory nose that also reveals tropical fruit aromas yet keeps the focus on precision, freshness and purity of the Hipping terroir. Savory, salivating, saline and straight and in a certain way also astringent, this is a youthful Hipping with a long, savory and intense, dense and sustainable finish. It's very promising, but give it time! 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs is from a site with various exposures, as it is in a dell. It was harvested all at once, lending a spectrum of ripeness. Yarrow, chamomile and tansy are all suggested in its glorious herbal lift, accompanied by ripe Amalfi lemon zestiness. The palate has immediate fluidity and moves with dynamism and energy, pushing forward with savory lemon vivaciousness. So fluid, so full, yet so light. (Bone-dry)
