Barbaresco, Paje, Vecchie Viti, 2011

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

You noticed the step up intensity and complexity that you get from such old vines, however the real trick here is that it manages to maintain Paje’s characteristic charm end seduction, even if it does take a little longer to coax the flavours from the glass. Notes of kirsch, fresh cherry and mineral, tight packed and focused but so graceful with it. From 70 year old vines within the Paje vineyard, which is an ampitheatre in the centre of the Barbaresco commune facing south west and planted on limestone soils, sitting just below Rabaja.

critic reviews

95+/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

Roagna's 2011 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti opens with the most exquisite aromatics imaginable. A hypothetical blend of Asili and Montefico, the Pajé Vecchie Viti offers captivating perfume, ripe, silky fruit and exceptional overall balance. Oddly, the Vecchie Viti is much more accessible than the straight Pajé, which Roagna ascribes to this wine having had one more racking during aging. In 2011, the Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is pure and total finesse.

product details

An extraordinary follow-up to the great 2010 vintage, the 2011s are a resounding endorsement of the young Luca Roagna and his management of this eponymous Barbaresco and Barolo estate. Even in the warm, relatively short season that characterised 2011, Luca managed to lengthen ripening and pick late by keeping the bunches well-covered by the vines’ protective canopies. The results are wines of pristine fruit, unscathed by the sun-burning effects of mid-summer, which ooze silky-smooth ripe flavours and offer a sufficient twist of freshness to keep you wanting more. A very successful vintage here indeed and a measure of how great this estate has become.
