Barolo, Pira, 2011

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Less immediately enticing than the Paje but beautifully constructed. Clear crisp flavours with a well-defined structure and supporting backbone, notes of herb, cool forest berries and touches of wild strawberry. Juicy and energetic. Facing Serralunga, a south east exposure, Pira is the lower part of the famous Rocche di Castiglione cru and is a monopole of the Roagna family. The soils here are a complex mixture of sand, clay limestone and blue marl. The vineyard exposure gives the wine that important underlying freshness.

critic reviews

92/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

Roagna's 2011 Barolo Pira is soft, open-knit and expressive. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, anise and sweet tobacco give the Pira striking aromatic lift and inner perfume. Gracious and feminine throughout, the 2011 will drink well pretty much upon release. A kick of tannin and acidity on the finish are reminders this is indeed Barolo, but the 2011 is quite accessible for a young Roagna wine. This is a terrific example of the house style.

product details

An extraordinary follow-up to the great 2010 vintage, the 2011s are a resounding endorsement of the young Luca Roagna and his management of this eponymous Barbaresco and Barolo estate. Even in the warm, relatively short season that characterised 2011, Luca managed to lengthen ripening and pick late by keeping the bunches well-covered by the vines’ protective canopies. The results are wines of pristine fruit, unscathed by the sun-burning effects of mid-summer, which ooze silky-smooth ripe flavours and offer a sufficient twist of freshness to keep you wanting more. A very successful vintage here indeed and a measure of how great this estate has become.
