Grattamacco, Bolgheri Superiore, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

It is a rare Super Tuscan that is built primarily around freshness. However, the 2018 Grattamacco Superiore is exactly that, as a lifted, highly perfumed Cabernet-scented nose is adorned with touches of mint and herb, violet and blueberries. Though intense it is not overly rich nor glossy, instead there is an openness to the fruit and cracked spices that covers a wash of ripe tannins, comforting nuances of high quality oak and tobacco and a fine tremor of acidity. While there is a lot going on, the natural animation of 2018 makes this easy to drink and enjoy; a classic vintage that winemaker Luca Marrone is confident will go the distance. This is the most charming vintage we’ve ever tasted here. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese, the wine spent 18 months in 30% new French oak.

critic reviews

96/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Coming on the heels of the scorching hot 2017, this vintage started off with lots of rain in April and May that required preventative measures against fungal disease. Splendid heat and sunshine marked the summer months, but the freshness you taste in this wine is a beautiful characteristic of this cooler growing season. The 2018 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco reveals a finely nuanced bouquet with dark fruit, tobacco, smoke and earthy garrigue or underbrush. The wine leans toward full-bodied, but it also feels quite elegant and crisp on the streamlined finish.

The 2018 Grattamacco is the most elegant, refined and satisfying wine I have ever tasted from Grattamacco. There is a level of finesse here that is simply unreal. Bright and translucent, with tons of detail, the 2018 oozes with pedigree. Lavender, spice, mint, tobacco and dried flowers add an attractive upper register.
