Cami Pesseroles, Priorato, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Primarily Carignan of over 100 years old, blended with a smaller proportion of Garnacha planted in 1939 after the Civil War. Co-fermented in oak casks and for the first time in 2017, aging is carried out entirely in chestnut, acacia and cherry barrels (rather than oak) with a tiny proportion in Demi John. “It’s true that the chestnut is more rustic but it fits the character of Carinena, and the vineyard too, I think the wine has more soul, more character, more complexity.” A wonderfully complex dark fruited nose with hints of bitter chocolate, wild herbs, earth and incense leads in to a full bodied, succulent palate that is hard to describe. A certain tannic presence and fine, trembling acidity holds together and frames a vibrant, authentic style of wine that although powerful has a real sense of cohesion and balance. All the elements are in place for a long life ahead and yet there is something irresistible about it now…

critic reviews

95/100Josh Raynolds,Vinous

Deep, brilliant ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes spice-accented blueberry, cherry incense and succulent flowers, along with hints of licorice and woodsmoke that build in the background. Alluringly sweet and penetrating on the palate, which offers concentrated boysenberry, cherry cola, candied violet and spicecake flavors underscored by a vein of smoky minerality. Finishes extremely long, with impressive energy, mounting tannins and a sexy floral note.

94/100Luis Gutierrez,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2017 Cami Pesseroles has better harmony and less rusticity and feels very Carinena-esque. The wine matured in 650-liter chestnut barrels, going back to the traditions of the past, looking for the character of the old wines. 2017 is a gentler vintage, and the wine feels very relaxed, showing its true personality. A great change and a new profile of Cami Pesseroles. 2,200 bottles produced.
