Catalunya

In northeast Spain, the Catalunya wine region is a hub of Spanish viticulture, encompassing diverse climates and terrains that includes both coastal and mountainous zones. The region is internationally recognized for its array of high-quality wines and is home to several sub-regions that have achieved their own acclaim. Among these, Priorato stands out as a prestigious name, known for its deep black “licorella” schist and quartz soils that produce exceptionally concentrated and complex wines. One of the visionary producers in Catalunya, particularly in the Priorato sub-region, is Mas Martinet. The neighbouring DOP Montsant is less famous but makes compelling red, white and rosé from a range of varieties. The soils are more granitic in profile, producing wines with good acidities. The third major sub-region of Catalunya is Penedes, home to Cava and Spain’s best sparkling wine producers.

Grape Varieties of Catalunya

Catalunya is a melting pot of grape varieties, both indigenous and international. The region is particularly famous for its Garnacha and Cariñena , often used in making robust reds, including those of Priorato. Additionally, you'll find a variety of white grapes such as Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, which are essential in the production of Cava, Spain's iconic sparkling wine. Garnacha Blanca, Picpoul and others make up the balance.
