Candidate for most improved newcomer, perhaps by dint of ancient the Pajaro Shale that allows for deep root penetration, and correspondingly earlier vine maturity, Mt. Pajaro smells of this shale and of crushed stones and it pulses with a sort of vinous electricity. Pure ripe fresh citrus fruit shot through with beams of acid and tense minerality, this is both delicate and steely. If you were going to ape Puligny up here in the mountains, this is where you’d look to do it.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc Mt. Pajaro Vineyard is fascinating to taste next to the Horseshoe Chenin, as it displays a much more mineral-driven profile. Airy and weightless in the glass, with terrific precision, the Mt. Pajaro Chenin is decidedly nuanced. Citrus, mineral and floral notes abound. The textural weight of Chenin makes itself felt on the resonant mid-palate and finish. The interplay of varietal character and site expression is nothing short of compelling.
