Château Mauvesin Barton

Château Mauvesin Barton, Moulis, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

There’s a real generosity to the fruit here, a good juicy core of plums and griotte, with a glossy texture, surrounded by surprisingly ripe, smooth tannins. We can’t recall tasting a cask sample of Mauvesin with this much appeal or sophistication.

This Moulis from the Barton clan is 55% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc, which is pretty much the blend since their acquisition in 2011. The élevage was in one-third new oak. An attractive nose here, showing an integrated confidence, perfumed as many in this vintage are, fresh with scents of dark chocolate, dark cherry and powdered chalk. The palate is full of powdery grip, with savoury cherry and currant fruits, riven with notes of tar and olive, set in a rather lighter texture than some of its peers, over a dry structure of tightly knit tannins which linger confidently in the finish. A nicely composed Mauvesin this year which will need five years and probably more to come around. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

Good quality, there is an elegance that you always find in Mauvesin, with juicy, easy to approach unfussy dark fruits. More proof of the successful approach the Bartons have taken to this vineyard, in a challenging spot that can be impacted by frost. One to look out for.

A blend of 55% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Mauvesin Barton is showing well today, evoking aromas of spices, mulberries, dark berries and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, it's framed by structured tannins with a long, spicy and ethereal finish.

The 2022 Mauvesin Barton has a tightly wound bouquet that needed a bit of coaxing, eventually offering finely delineated blackberry, cedar and light briny scents. The palate is saline and quite classic in style, with powdery tannins. This tapers slightly toward the finish, but I appreciate its freshness and personality.
