Cornas, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

In 2021, the three usual Cornas cuvees have all been blended in to the main domaine Cornas. Bright, crispy Syrah on the nose with violet, blueberries and smouldering spices; salt and pepper and graphite, there is depth here and true Cornas character without excess weight. Mostly destemmed to preserve the vintage’s juicy, lightness of touch, this is a drinkable, energetic Cornas that will delight in youth. Aged for 14 months in second use demi-muids.

critic reviews

93+/100Yohan Castaing,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

In 2021, facing a challenging vintage, Johann Michel decided to produce just one cuvee in Cornas. Aromas of spices, smoke and dark wild berries preface the 2021 Cornas, a medium- to full-bodied, structured and rich Cornas with a layered and sappy texture, velvety tannins and an enrobing mid-palate that transitions into a long, powerful and penetrating finish. Given the difficulties of the vintage, this cuvee stands out as a significant achievement.

Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed, mineral and spice-accented red and dark berry preserve, floral, olive and smoked meat aromas, along with a spicy nuance that builds steadily in the glass. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering sweet blueberry, cherry-cola, spicecake and espresso flavors, with a touch of black pepper. Finishes very long and smoky, with mounting tannins and repeating florality. 20% whole clusters.
