One of the edgier, fresher Barolos in the cellar, showing crisp spicy fruit, notes of salted dark plums and grippingy forest fruit. This is the second vintage of a new Scavino acquisition – 3ha of 35-40 year old vines in Ravera which, at 430 metres altitude, is their highest vineyard and the last to be harvested. A cool and windy terroir that faces east from which only 6000 bottles are produced, the rest is sold in bulk. Aged for one year in large oak ‘botti’ and one year in barriques with a maximum of 10 percent new wood.

The 2017 Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera has a deep ruby color. The nose is a bit more lifted and closed right now with less fruit but more floral notes. On the palate the tannins are a little crunchier and greener in nature and feel a bit dry on the finish. This wine has some very pretty aromas of wildflowers that evolve in the glass and a bright, tangy finish. Keep for 1-2 years to allow the tannins to soften.

Showing resolve and determination, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from Novello) offers more concentration and a much darker quality of fruit with blackberry and plum. Ravera gives us density and power and a generous display of dark spice with tobacco and toasted hazelnut. Despite that extra muscle and heft, I love how the tannins are so expertly integrated into the fruit.

The 2017 Barolo Ravera is dazzling. Deep, potent and virile, the 2017 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, smoke, game, lavender and licorice convey a real impression of gravitas that is reinforced by the wine’s overall feel. This powerhouse Barolo is magnificent today in a sort of old-school meets new-school style.
