Barolo, Ravera, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

At 430m above sea level this is the highest vineyard the Savino’s own, and the wine reflects this with its vital, breezy fruit. Juicy, and full of energy and vigour, this is a boisterous Barolo bursting with wild plum, hedgerow berry and herb characteristics. It holds nothing back and makes the mouth water. Brilliant, invigorating Barolo. A cool and windy terroir that faces east from which only 6000 bottles are produced, the rest is sold in bulk. Aged for two years in large oak ‘botti.’

critic reviews

92/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a relatively soft wine for this site. It offers fine aromatic complexity, but not quite the depth or persistence of the very best years. As such, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Touches of cedar, dried cherry, pipe tobacco and mint linger.

The 2018 Paolo Scavino Barolo Ravera from Novello has a ripe nose - bright cherries and sun-warmed strawberries mingle with very subtle, sweet oak-spice. On the palate there is a wall of upright, dry edged tannins while the fruit in the middle is a little shy at present. There is a slight green flavor, but the crunchy, slightly less ripe tannins combine with a pleasant salty, savory finish. Wait one to two years, then drink for 15 to 20 years.

Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.
