Pinot Noir, Vrede, Hemel en Aarde, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Open, pretty and delicate with a spectrum of ripe aromatic fruits; raspberry, strawberries, cherries and fine earth, with a fresh, concentrated feel and finessed tannins. Not simple yet so inviting and delicious! Aged for a year in roughly a third new French oak. Vrede is a north-east facing slope in the lower Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the soils are predominantly stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale bringing texture and complexity.

critic reviews

94/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

From a site with iron-rich soils planted in 2008, the Storm 2022 Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Pinot Noir Vrede is a beautiful wine with fresh blooming violet, rose water and sweet Turkish delight all wrapped within a silky mouthfeel and grippy tannins (thanks to 10% to 20% stem inclusion). The oak program includes Burgundian coopers Francois Freres, Tremeaux and Chassin, with mostly medium and light-toast barrels (and 25% new oak). An aging regime of 12 months is the same for most of these wines, followed by 14 months in bottle. I love the tension of this pretty Pinot Noir.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Vrede includes 15% whole bunch and matured for 11 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. The aromatics needed a little coaxing from the glass, revealing brambly red berry fruit intermixed with briar and light sous bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a brisk, peppery opening, a noticeable marine element and a linear, strict finish. This is very fine, but it will need a couple of years in bottle; of the three Pinot cuvées from Storm, this improves the most in the glass.
