    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Storm Wines, Pinot Noir, Vrede, Hemel en Aarde, 2021

Initially the Vrede shows a linearity of fruit which is not often a feature of the site. With aeration, the vibrant red berries, cherry stone and flowers relax, and the wine unveils a sophisticated ferrous and soft earth note. The tannins are crisp, do not dominate and add to the overall refreshing, juicy feel of the 2021. Raised for 11 months in 25% new oak and held back in bottle before release. A north-east facing slope in the lower Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the soils are predominantly stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale bringing texture and complexity. Just 343 cases were produced.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Vrede includes 20% whole bunches, aged in used Burgundy barrels for 11 months. The nose has wild strawberry and cranberry scents with hints of pressed rose petals. The medium-bodied palate has edgy tannins, is very linear with a lot of piquancy, and is tightly wound on the saline finish. It may need more flesh around the bones. Yet of the three Pinot cuvées, it improves and coheres the most, and lo and behold, it ends up my favorite of the trio this year.
