Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

A blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Belair-Monange has a deep garnet-purple color. It begins on a single note of bright, juicy red berries and roses, before expanding out to a whole array of suggestions of black plums, raspberry preserves, and mince pie, plus wafts of lilacs, loam, and cinnamon toast. The palate is full-on, full-bodied, jam-packed with muscular black and red berry layers and so many floral and savory accents, supported by velvety tannins, finishing with epic length and so much energy that it shimmers.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2020 Bélair-Monange has a brilliant bouquet that confirms my adulation from barrel with a cornucopia of aromas: black cherries, dates, crushed rock and pressed violets all unfold in dazzling fashion. The palate is beautifully proportioned with finely chiseled tannins, fresh and perhaps the most saline of J-P Moueix's 2020s. It builds supremely well on the mouth towards a structured yet pixelated finish. This fabulous Saint-Émilion may deserve even more adulation further down the line.

Château Belair Monange

Château Belair Monange

The estate formally known as Chateau Belair - one of the most revered estates in Bordeaux; Belair Monange is the renaissance of a great terroir. Despite its enviable position on the limestone Cote of St Emilion, next to Chateau Ausone, Belair was a perennial underachiever, unable to replicate past glories from its heyday.

Purchased in 2007 by the Moueix family, the name was changed in honour of Anne-Adèle Monange, wife of Jean Moueix, and also to avoid confusion with the multitude of other Belairs! A huge effort in the vineyard, in the winery and also restoring the Chateau has made an instant impact. The first vintage produced under the watchful eye of Christian and Edouard Moueix was the 2008. The results were clear to see. In September 2012 Belair Monange incorporated the neighbouring vineyards of Magdelaine (also a Moueix estate). This has increased production and far from diluting the quality, subsequent vintages keep getting better and better. Those who like serious, ethereal, high-toned St Emilion should take note.
