    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

We were generally very impressed by the balance and harmony of the wines at the St Julien UGC. Few were blockbusters, but they all had ample fruit, a sense of freshness, sympathetic tannins and a sense of cohesion. The 2015 Beychevelle is produced from 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. There is a classy bouquet of liqueur fruits and minerals. The palate offers plenty of juicy plummy character and there is quite a serious tannic structure. This is a grown-up Beychevelle.

The 2015 Beychevelle was matured in 50% new oak. This showing is consistent with previous tastings: fine tannins, quite sapid on the mid-palate with a grainy texture. The finish is tinged with black olive.

Tasted alongside the 2015 Amiral, this also shows a little of the baked caramelisation seen on the nose of the second wine. It is a fleeting element though, and there are some enticing aromas offered for alternative interest, including dark fruits, white flowers, blackberry and liquorice. Beautifully textured, on the palate, this feels very complete, with a textural confidence supported by finely powdery tannins, more finely integrated than in the 2015 Amiral. Pure and delineated, with that caramel hint fading into irrelevance, this is a decent result for the 2015 vintage in this corner of the Médoc, which I still think did less well than the right bank in this vintage. Drink or hold, but I think I would suggest the latter.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Beychevelle is quite closed and broody to begin, offering glimpses at tar and chargrill scents over a core of plum preserves, baked blackcurrants, and espresso, plus a touch of black olives. The medium-bodied palate is taut and muscular, with slowly evolving black fruits and earthy layers supported by ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with great persistence.
