The 2023 Certan de May has a curious, high-toned, menthol-tinged bouquet that bursts from the glass. Are you from Pomerol or McLaren Vale? That said, it is not unattractive. The palate is cut from a similar cloth, with that mentholé element present throughout. Quite luscious compared to recent vintages, balanced with a sweet confit finish, it is a bit of an oddball, but I do prefer this to other vintages that have felt surprisingly meagre.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Certan de May comes bounding out with exuberant notes of crushed blackberries, juicy black cherries, and menthol leading to wafts of lavender and rosemary. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and plush, with juicy black berry flavors and a floral lift on the finish. The blend is 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Medium to full intensity in the colour, fragrant spices of grilled cumin and turmeric, with sage alongside cassis and bilberry fruit, overall dark and concentrated in feel, with crushed mint leaf. Enjoyables. 5.5ha estate, harvest September 13 to 26.
Aromas of dark berries, minty cherries, chocolate and creamy new oak introduce the 2023 Certan de May, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate that's a touch varietal and ephemeral, concluding with a fleeting, vanillin-inflected finish.
