This feels very restrained at the moment, with a light overlay of smoky lactone oak masking a little of the fruit, and what does show through has a powdery suggestion of pine needle. The palate is fresh, polished, rather supple in style, with a rich phenolic texture developing through the midpalate, which is filled out with a firm grip and supported by a modest core of acidity. Plenty of bitter vigour on the finish. A nicely composed grand vin with a significant component of Semillon given its citrus reticence and acid profile, which comes supported by some smoky oak. I can see this developing well over the next four or five years. The alcohol on the label is 13.5%.
The 2022 Opalie has fine mineralité on the open nose, with dew-speckled green apple mixed with pear and nectarine. The palate is balanced with Clementine and pear notes. It's not complex but has a pleasing waxy texture and decent length.
The 2022 Opalie de Coutet, 93% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Semillon, comes bounding out with exuberant notes of juicy peaches, spiced apples, and orange blossom with wafts of fennel seed and chalk. The medium-bodied palate is racy, with great intensity of peach and apple flavors and a zesty lift on the finish.
