Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Gazin, Pomerol, 2018

We're big fans of Gazin. This elegant chateau situated on the edge of the Pomerol plateau between Petrus and the Lalande de Pomerol border is on a fine run. They seem to produce honest wines with character and charm without any pretention. The 2018 was a little difficult to assess - the sample we tasted with masked in oak. The palate has rather attractive sappy fruit, quite strict and cool, but detailed and focussed with lots of energy and a vibrant mouth-watering finish of sweet damsons and Victoria plum. Perhaps a little rustic, but if it gentrifies in barrel this will be a delicious Pomerol.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2018 Gazin has a deep garnet purple color. It starts off with scents of cedar, tobacco, and pencil lead, leading to baked blackberries and mulberries, with a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, it is soft and understated in the mouth, with an earthy finish.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2018 Gazin has a lively, generous bouquet of vivacious wild strawberry, boysenberry and hints of tobacco. The aromatics are well delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, offering seductive black fruit mixed with black pepper, truffle and clove. There is so much finesse toward the finish that it is approachable now, yet it certainly has the substance to suggest long-term aging. Not to be underestimated, this is another wonderful Gazin.

Château Gazin

Château Gazin

Covering 26 ha in a single plot of upper terrace Pomerol terroir, Château Gazin was acquired in the early 20th century by Louis Soualle, today it is managed by the fifth generation of his descendants.

Originally on the site of the "Hospital of Pomeyrols", built by the knights to receive pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela route, Gazin’s terroir consists of the clay-gravel subsoil, planted with 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years and they are planted with a density of 5,500 to 7,000 per hectare. The vines are cultivated using traditional growing methods and an environmentally-friendly approach with ploughing, organic fertilizers, minimum use of pesticides.

Harvest is carried out by hand, with grapes undergoing an initial sorting in the vineyard, before two further sortings take place in the vat room, both before and after de-stemming. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small concrete vats, separated by grape variety and plot, the juice and skins are then left to macerate for two to three weeks. Maturation takes place in 50% new oak barrels for eighteen months.
