Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Lacoste Borie, Pauillac, 2022

Lacoste Borie is always one of our favourite second wines, but we don't think we've ever encountered such a serious, texturally alluring example as the 2022. This smells, tastes and feels like a very grown-up wine. Opening with a classic GPL bouquet of flowers, dried lavender, blackcurrant and a sheen of blue and purple fruits, it leads to a juicy, supple core of of fragrant berries – fluid and perfumed, this is an absolute delight, finishing with succulent, sweet tannins – perfectly pitched, a really well-proportioned Lacoste Borie. Fabulous! 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

This is full of serious Pauillac tannins, great quality, with plenty of depth to the black fruits and acidity to underpin the palate. Firm in its framework, serious and with clear ability to soften over ageing, good quality, softened by edges of damp fern and rose petal aromatics. 3.6ph, 40% of production in this wine. 50% new oak for ageing.

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Lacoste-Borie is deep garnet-purple in color. It scoots out with eager-to-please scents of redcurrant jelly, fresh blackberries, and black raspberries, plus wafts of wild sage, roses, and tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate is bright and refreshing with soft tannins, leading to a perfumed finish on this pretty wine.

The 2022 Lacoste-Borie, raised in 50% new oak, has an ebullient bouquet with cranberry, raspberry and wilted rose petal scents. There is a trace of melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. The 2022 shows a lovely balance, somehow carefree, with completeness and what I suspect will be enticing drinkability. That said, it has the structure to age.

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

A very old Chateau - it's first mention in official documents appears at the beginning of the XVIth century - this estate extends over 225 acres in a single plot of land to the south of Pauillac - which is where the original name "Grand-Puy" came from. Mr Lacoste added his name to the Château when he bought the property and kept it until the epidemic of phylloxera at the end of the XIXth century. GPL's reputation in the wine world will be down in part to Mr. Raymond Dupin, a legendary figure in the Medoc, who was proprietor until 1978 when he sold the estate to M. Borie.

Nowadays, François-Xavier Borie is managing things. He renewed the cellars of the Château just before producing the great vintage of 1982. The vinification and ageing of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is conducted with the same technique and attention to detail, as those of the other estates managed by Borie - such as Château Haut-Batailley.
