Lacoste Borie, Pauillac, 2022
Lacoste Borie is always one of our favourite second wines, but we don't think we've ever encountered such a serious, texturally alluring example as the 2022. This smells, tastes and feels like a very grown-up wine. Opening with a classic GPL bouquet of flowers, dried lavender, blackcurrant and a sheen of blue and purple fruits, it leads to a juicy, supple core of of fragrant berries – fluid and perfumed, this is an absolute delight, finishing with succulent, sweet tannins – perfectly pitched, a really well-proportioned Lacoste Borie. Fabulous! 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.
critic reviews
The blend of the second wine of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, and the élevage was 14 to 16 months in 45% new oak. The nose opens with a welcoming and charming nose, smoky dried cherries and griottes, a little currant, dried raspberry and toast. It feels very Pauillac in style, through to the rather soft and supple palate, with an easy-going substance and a core of gentle powdery tannins. It finishes with a rather sharp, acidulous cherry note which fills the length. Plenty of structure, and a light blanket of fruit, means this will tolerate mid-term aging only I think;come back in three to five years to see how it is getting along. The alcohol is 14% on the label.
The 2022 Lacoste-Borie presents a vibrant nose, well-defined and focused with blackberry, wild strawberry and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, moderate weight and a fresh, generous finish. It may not be as long on the aftertaste as others, but this is a very delicious Lacoste-Borie.
This is full of serious Pauillac tannins, great quality, with plenty of depth to the black fruits and acidity to underpin the palate. Firm in its framework, serious and with clear ability to soften over ageing, good quality, softened by edges of damp fern and rose petal aromatics. 3.6ph, 40% of production in this wine. 50% new oak for ageing.
A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Lacoste-Borie is as good a wine from this label as I can remember tasting. Exhibiting aromas of cassis, charcoal and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with excellent depth and persistence.
