    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The Guinaudeau’s white wines have received much praise in recent years. Their tireless pursuit of excellence and innovative approach towards clones and vinifications has resulted in some really special, atypical white Bordeaux. 2019 Grand Village Blanc is a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc (predominantly Sancerre clones with some older Bordeaux clones) and 26% Semillon, harvested from a two hectare plot with a little more clay in the soil than that used for red production. This has been vinified entirely in stainless steel and bottled in the first spring after harvest. The 2019 is hard to place, with many critics and tasters looking towards the Cote d’Or for references. It is extremely precise with fragrant notes of gooseberries, citrus fruits, flowers and stones. The palate has laser like precision – crystalline fruits lead towards the bright, saline, racy finish. This is fast becoming one of the most interesting white wines on our list.

A blend of 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, the 2023 white Grand Village springs with spritely notes of lime leaves, fresh lemons, and yuzu, plus suggestions of white pepper and chalk dust. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant with great tension, finishing long and zesty.

The Guinedeau family are killing it with the whites in their range, despite being fara better known for their reds - for me a true sign that the people behind them are wine lovers, who like drinking them, and are excited about the possibilities. This is far simpler than the Champs Libres, but that doesn't make it any less dynamic, just less structured. Expect here fresh citrus, touch of lime peel, salted cracker, and a juicy finish, once again more about texture than fruit.

The 2023 Grand Village Blanc was picked August 26 to 31 and is a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. It has a fragrant bouquet with lime, kiwi fruit and nettle—a little earthy in style. The palate is fresh and sapid with crisp acidity, presenting notes of fresh green apples and pears with a bright and energetic bitter-lemon finish. Delicious.
