Château Léoville Las Cases, 2ème Cru Classé, St Julien, 2013

Leoville Las Cases hails from the Clos Leoville Las Cases which covers almost 60 hectares just south of the Pauillac border next to Chateau Latour. It is a wonderful site overlooking the Gironde estuary, capable of producing some of the most age worthy wines from Bordeaux. The style is big and uncompromising and often challenging to taste when young. The 2013 is a powerful, muscular wine. It has a brooding bouquet of pencil shavings, black fruit, violets, clove, liquorice, forest floor and maybe even a hint of over ripeness to the fruit. The palate is packed with seductive cool cassis fruit; very precise and taut. An impressive wine with imposing tannins, which will require time. Produced from 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc cropped at 31hl/ha.
