Love the mouthwatering freshness and the precision to the white pear, kiwi and citrus flavours. Shows careful precision, great quality, lift through the finish, saffran and sage, and the oak notes have integrated into the structure since En Primeur. Michel Rolland consultant.

The 2021 Pape Clement blanc is made from 97% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Semillon. Vibrant notions of white peaches, fresh pineapple, and pink grapefruit jump from the nose with hints of sea spray, honeysuckle, and dill seed. Light-bodied, the palate has wonderful tension and loads of tightly wound citrus and tropical layers, finishing long and minerally.

Bottled the previous January, the 2021 Pape-Clément Blanc is a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon. This has a brisk and lively bouquet with Golden Delicious, persimmon and white peach scents, well-defined and notably focused. The palate is well-balanced with a fresh entry and a pleasant "bite" of acidity, revealing notes of Anjou pear, red apple and a dash of spice toward the cohesive finish. The growing season advantaged the whites over the reds and, although I am not sure about the longevity of this white, it will definitely give pleasure over the next decade.

Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément

Bernard Magrez’s flagship estate is ideally nestled in the suburbs of Bordeaux, close to the Rocade and not far away from Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion. The terroir is well respected, however, the Magrez style is sometimes criticised for over extraction. Indeed, the wines do sometimes appear thick when tasted from barrel, but there are many fans, none more influential than the American critic, Robert Parker. Of the 32.5 hectares of vineyards, 30 are planted with red varietals (60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot). The Pape Clement Blanc is produced from 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle and unusually is fermented and aged in oak. As a result it is quite a distinctive style and has a niche following.
