Château Troplong Mondot, 1er Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, 2016
Troplong Mondot has a reputation for producing big, bold wines. The 2016 is true to form. It's almost Napa like in its intensity and flavour profile. The tannins are big and chunky as one would expect, but there is more list and freshness than in most recent vintages. Finishes with black cherry liqueur, cassis and chocolate. A classic Troplong!
critic reviews
The 2016 Troplong Mondot has quite a powerful bouquet with black plum and boysenberry fruit, violet and cassis, perhaps just a little Napa-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a tannic entry, good depth and is obviously more oaky than subsequent vintages. There are some wood tannins towards the finish that I would just keep an eye on in the future. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s Ten Year On tasting and also at the estate.
Richly textured, full of mouthfeel and floral edges, hard to argue with, still young at the 10 year mark, luscious, graphite and crushed rocks, with the salt-scrape and bitter fennel that is essential to offer balance among all this exuberance. Same high alcohols as 2015 but takes it far more in its stride, this will be a great wine for those with the patience to wait. Last year with Xavier Pariente in charge at the estate with Michel Rolland consulting winemaker.
