Jacques Thienpont's extraordinary vineyard in Pomerol produces one of the most remarkable wines in the world. It is exuberant, as fragrant and complex as Richebourg, tense and vibrant, and always a pure delight to taste, whether from barrel, tank or bottle... We had a sneak preview at the 2016 in October when we were tasting the 2015. Alcoholic fermentations had finished and we could clearly see the purity and potential of the fruit. Tasting in April the nose is slightly reductive and brooding, which is unusual for Le Pin, normally we can wax lyrical about the breadth of the bouquet. With aeration, notes of flowers and strawberry liqueur emerge. On the palate, the quality of the fruit is immediately recognisable. This is a large-scale Le Pin with superb density and energy. Its multidimensional palate reveals detailed floral fruit and minerals little by little. Texturally this is quite superb - it coats the mouth with a seductive velvety robe of pure lavish fruit: olallieberry, loganberry and detailed lingonberries. It is pure delight to taste, but hints at the long future that lies ahead - this is one of the most muscular and profound Le Pins we have ever tasted.
