Gevrey Chambertin, Clos St Jacques, 1er Cru, 2020
Tighter, fresher and more focused than the Cazetiers, if less immediately seductive. Crisp, mineral, cool, ripe red berry fruit; vivid and unwaveringly tense and linear, extending through to a long, lively finish. Classy Gevrey that awakens the tastebuds. One of Gevrey’s great Premiers Crus situated high up on the slope, many believe it to be more deserving of Grand Cru status than a number of Gevrey’s more dubious Grands Crus. This high situation and red clay-based soils make for wines of freshness, tension and well-defined structure. The vineyard was planted in 1957, a massale selection of Pinot Fine made by Bruno's father, resulting in low yields – rarely more than 30hl/ha.
critic reviews
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an intense but delineated bouquet. It combines red and blue fruit, violet and subtle flinty aromas. There's fine mineralité here. The palate is quite robust with firm tannins. It's one of the grippier Clos Saint-Jacques, overtly spiced with compact black fruit towards the finish. It may be just a bit tough at the moment, but it will loosen up with time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
