Château de Marsannay
Marsannay, Clos du Roy, 2018
justerini & brooks tasting note
Deep, layered but silky. Simply the most intense, complex and concentrated Marsannay we have tasted. Compact and dark-fruited to begin with, but this does slowly unwind to reveal mouth-cleansing limestone characteristics alongside racy bramble, cherry and loganberry fruit wrapped in glossy, binding tannins. A staggering statement of the quality potential Marsannay can reach. A cuvée made from a plot of 70-year old vines planted on stony soils with a clay subsoil. A great vineyard and surely a candidate for 1er Cru status if Marsannay ever wins the right. Fermented with whole bunches only and so intense that it will receive an extra six months in barrel compared to the other Marsannays.
