justerini & brooks tasting note

Clos de la Commaraine brings together the two distinct soil types that are found across Pommard: one a redder high iron content soil, the other much whiter and more calcareous. These two soils span three distinct vineyard zones, which are then subdivided into 8 smaller plots. Each of these plots is approached as unique, from the cover crop decisions, to how much debudding, when to prune, which moons to follow, what kind of compost, how many pumpovers and so on. It’s a bespoke micro vinification approach that allows the very best attributes of each plot to emerge. In 2023 this is born out with aplomb. A wine of gorgeous texture and salinity, with an energetic, mineral but also sumptuous and rich tapestry of fruit and fine stones. Starts off fine and lifted, then on the finish that red earth structure comes through. This is a grower, sleek and refined and seamlessly layered.

The 2023 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru has a clean, precise bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and light pencil box scents. This is detailed and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth opening, as hints of dark chocolate and mocha infuse the black fruit. There is a little oak to be assimilated, but the 2023 displays fine depth as a dash of black pepper enhances the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle.
