Nuits-Saint-Georges, 2019
Dark but smooth and sensual Nuits. Dense rich, glossy flavours of bramble and damson cover the palate, and a hint of clove and liquorice provide a spicy complexity. These flavours are wrapped in a solid tannic framework initially hidden by their smoothness, whilst a perky acidity provides lift to the mid palate. Solid but suave and well balanced. This is normally from 8 plots across the Nuits commune with the south side of Nuits having the most influence on the blend.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Village was completely destemmed. I had trouble getting my head around the bouquet; it came across quite reduced (which is not uncommon with young Gouges wines), missing some delineation and a bit blocky. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and offers commendable vigor, moderate depth and candied red fruit laced with orange peel toward the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will knit together with bottle age.
