Nuits St Georges, Les Pruliers, 1er Cru, 2012

justerini & brooks tasting note

Very much like the Porrets in style, perhaps a touch less compact. Pure classicism. Tight-wound, vibrant and lively, sophisticated and alluring fruit notes of red cherry, raspberry and loganberry, hints of earthiness too with a strong overtone of flint and a gravelly minerality. Striking. A parcel of 50-year-old vines close to Clos des Porrets that, like its neighbour, also produces classic powerful Nuits.

The 2012 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has an absolutely charming bouquet with pure red cherry, strawberry and cranberry scents, and an underlying mineral note that becomes more prominent with aeration. It just feels refined and self-assured. The palate is very poised and harmonious on the entry, a mixture of red and black fruit, spicier than the 2011 or 2010 with a sense of energy and tension towards the linear finish. This has great potential and shows off the class of this Premier Cru. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers was showing just a little reduction on the nose, but it reluctantly opens with lovely cranberry and pomegranate scents mingling with cold stone and even light mushroom scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, taut tannin; quite elegant and harmonious on the finish that does not quite possess the animation of the Clos des Porrets at the moment. Let's see if it catches up its fellow premier crus in bottle.
